Linux Training of Trainers LPIC-1 + FOSS Business Models

Do you want to be a certified Linux trainer (LPIC-1)?

Do you want to know more about how to create business by offering a
training on Free and Open Source Software?

IOSN ASEAN+3 in cooperation with InWEnt Capacity Building
International, Germany and NetNam Corporation of Vietnam are holding a
training of trainers session in Hanoi, Vietnam for Vietnamese
participants over 10 days (30th July-10th August).

This course prepares participants for Linux Professionals Institute
(www.lpi.org or LPI) certification as well as to become Linux trainers
in their own right.

After the training, the trainers will sit for examination to be
certified as LPIC Level 1 Linux professionals. The low cost LPI
certification exam on the 11th August is open to all.

Why a train-the-trainer approach?

A major barrier against adoption and deployment of Free and Open
Source Software (FOSS) in developing of countries in the Asia Pacific
is the lack of human resources with FOSS skills. This programme aims
to address the problem by training trainers in countries, so that
these trainers in turn will be able to train other trainers and
therefore commence self-sustaining development of FOSS human
resources.

Why training on business models?

Countries that want to adopt FOSS need to build capacity for ICT and
FOSS by developing and increasing the pool of human resource skilled
in FOSS application and development. Countries face several barriers
that must be addressed simultaneously. These barriers include lack of
local trainers and developers, high costs of training and
certification, and lack of awareness in industry of the benefits of
FOSS, FOSS trained human resource, as well as viable FOSS business
models.

Yet, as observed from IOSN's previous engagements, awareness and
capacity development cannot be endpoints in and of themselves. A
nurturing ICT ecosystem must exist wherein suppliers and end users of
FOSS products and services are able to understand each other's roles
and support each other's needs.

Therefore, in addition, a 2-day parallel seminar on Introduction to
FOSS Business Models will be conducted. The training is part of the
it@foss initative (www.it-foss.org).

Component 1: TRAINING - LPIC Level 1 certification (for systems
administrators)

Trainees will be able to maintain workstations and basic LAN and
Internet server services.

Component 2: INTRODUCTION TO FOSS BUSINESS MODELS

Invited to participate are executives, chief information officers
(CIOs), managers, business owners and entrepeneurs from SMEs, NGOs and
government agencies. The seminar aims to present experiences and
business strategies by guest speakers from Vietnam and from other
countries touching on free software business models usually based on
adding value such as services and support, product enhancement and
customization, enabling hardware components, dual licensing, solution
integration, lowering cost of end-of-life, training, and
certification.

Business people related to the Linux trainees in Component 1 have
higher priority.

LPI LEVEL 1 CERTIFICATION EXAMS

This will be held on the SATURDAY, 11th August 2007 and is open to the
public. A separate call will be released specific to this
examination.

PARTICIPANT QUALIFICATIONS:

For Component 1 (Linux System Administrators)

> Minimum of 2 to 3 years of relevant experience in Linux system and network administration and deployment.
> Familiar with and user and/or developer of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).
> Vietnamese presently residing and working in small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and government agencies in Vietnam.
> Willing and permitted to undergo a 10-day (Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-5:00PM) continuous training.
> Focused on training other prospective trainers in their localities to sustain and promote self-sustaining development of FOSS human resources.
> Females are highly encouraged to participate to achieve gender balance.

For Component 2 (FOSS Business Models)

> Institutional Leaders of participants in Component 1 (LTOT-1)
> Other leaders of small-to-medium enterprises, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies
