Fees for the course, including two coffe-breaks, CDs, printed materials are 100.000 VND. Place is at CNF (address shown in my signature) A maximum of 10 seats (one person per computer) is offered for this course. To register, you need to send an email and to come pay your fees before the 8th of February at the address shown in the signature. Who may follow this course ? People who are using computers but have never used Linux or installed Linux by themselves and that are willing to (a) learn about Linux or/and (b) wish to be able to install Linux by themselves on their own computer. Instructors will be David Tremblay (HanoiLug) and myself. The content of the course (the order of items in each session are just for indication) (e.g. Morning session:) 1) Linux distributions and Live CDs What is Linux ; what are Linux distributions ; what are live CDs useful for. 2) Linux installation : We will use the live CD Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop to perform the installation process on a typical computer installed with FreeDos (to mimict Windows computers). 3) Customization of the installed Linux distribution We will run through various customization and settings of your Desktop preferences ; add essential packages and/or softwares to be able to exchange files with users of the Microsoft Windows World (MS core fonts, reading Windows media player files, Flash, Real Audio, MP3) (e.g. Afternoon session) 4) Thoroughly review the main applications coming along with Ubuntu : File manager/explorer (Nautilus) ; office suite (Openoffice.org) ; web browser (Firefox, Epiphany) ; email clients (Thunderbird) ; chat (Gaim) ; (basic) image manipulation (GIMP) 5) Managing the system: Adding users ; updating the system ; using the Terminal, etc. For any need of information, you can join me by phone at 868.48.85, office hours from Tuesday through Saturday, every week.
