Re: [OSS] Re: Currently Recommended Linux Distro for Vietnam?

Hi everybody,

My opinion is that, if you don't plan to let her dig into computer
science, most well known distro will do it as long as it's up-to-date
and user friendly. The best I know for now are Ubuntu and Mandrake. My
personnal flavor being Ubuntu, wich is based on Debian, in fact with the
help of some frustated DD (= Debian Developper), people knowing the
Debian way will understand what I mean. ;-)

It's the default way to do it (use a fast connexion as ADSL), but you
can also get a copy of their full archive (11 Go) to work mostly
offline. You'll still need a good connexion for security updates, but
that's the same for any distribution anyway (unless you plan to
definitly neither connect to any network nor use files from unsafe
sources). It's true that Ubuntu is based on a regular release cycle,
every 6 months, but it's up to you to follow it or not. The Ubuntu staff
will maintain any release for at least 18 months. All this is well
explained on www.ubuntu.com.

Note that you can get Ubuntu Install or Live CD at our office. You can
also come with a computer or external hard-drive to make a copy of our
Ubuntu mirror (11 Go for packets archive, 500 Mo for security updates
and another 500 Mo for OpenOffice.org 2.0.1, vietnamese included).

It's a matter of opinion, but I think Gnome is easier for begginers,
simply because it has fewer options to tune.

Note that Gnome has already been translated into vietnamese (by Nguyễn
Thái Ngọc Duy, if I'm correct) and I know that Clytie Siddall
(Australian of Vietnamese origin) is now doing a great job to maintain
this translation along new versions.
