Re: [OSS] Currently Recommended Linux Distro for Vietnam?

Hello,

I believe that the majority of Vietnamese in Vietnam currently using
Linux is still using RedHat or Redhat-related (Fedora).
IMHO this does not mean that it is the best solution, because support is
not really available outside of the public forums like
http://www.vnlinux.org/ etc. where many Linux distributions are in use,
currently there it is more Mandrake like, also some Debian etc.

Larry Nguyen (who operates the Vietlug mail-list, see on the above cited
site) is promoting a Vietnamese-based Linux distribution, especially
targeted at VN schoolchildren called VnLinuxEDU, that you can download
for trying.

I think it could be valuable for a try and to keep it if you (or your
daughter) like it

Here at AUF, we are using (and will promote) Ubuntu Linux which you can
configure to have a Gnome Vietnamese interface (but applications will
still in majority be based in English whenever a VN version is not
available).

From my experience (which one is from a Veteran Windows user, much more
than that of a Linux geek) Ubuntu is very user-friendly and comes with a
set of applications that should satisfy the majority of needs of anyone.
Updating and upgrading the system looks very easy and we have an Ubuntu
mirror set in Vietnam at AUF, which helps for the updating process. I
think it satisfies most, if not all of the specifications that you've
put down below.

BTW, we intend to try to start an Ubuntu club for beginners in Hanoi.

The only drawback is that you need to have a broadband width connection
for the initial installation and immediate upgrading that is necessary.

I prefer KDE, but Gnome under Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 is ok.
