Subject: [unitescommunity] Linux for wimps ;-) Date: Thu, 03 Mar 2005 16:21:36 +0000 From: J Cravens <jcravens42@yahoo.com> To: unitescommunity@yahoogroups.com I'm not sure how available "Xandros" is to volunteers in developing countries... I found this testimonial about it very interesting -- it's from a person who is a tutor at Open University for a technology-related course. I'm posting it here because a while back, some people said that the reason Linux isn't used as an operating system is because it's too hard to install (never mind that MS is even harder to install, but you don't know that because it's usually already installed on your machine...): --- Begin forwarded message --- I finally got round to installing Linux on my spare PC. So I stuck a Xandros CD in the drive, rebooted, clicked a few buttons, and 15 minutes later had a working Linux system. And when I say working, I mean *everything* worked, without me having to configure anything, other than supply an IP address: Internet access, mounting network shares on the Windows PCs, printing to a networked printer ... it is really slick. Anyone capable of installing Windows could do this. Then I confess I wimped out even further, went off to [ http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html ]XAMPP, downloaded and unpacked a single tarball, and hey presto, Apache, MySQL and PHP are up and running now! Admittedly the default setup of this is terribly insecure, but you can fix that after installing. I admit Xandros isn't for geeks, but if you just want to get Linux installed and start working productively in the minimum amount of time, it's hard to beat. Looks nice too! ----- End forwarded message ------
