Fwd: Tran Luu Chuong (1919-2005)

Dear Friends,

I just got the truly sad news, that our dear list member Professor Tran Luu
Truong passed away today.

Truong, I don't know should I call him "Bac", or more "Anh", has always
been a great inspiration for me. According to his age, he might have been
"Bac", but from his spirit and passion, he definitely was "Anh".

I remember some years ago, when we were planning a ISOC/UNDP seminar about
Unicode (?). Vern had arranged a meeting with him and Mr. Loc. We were
talking shortly. It was quite clear, that I was a "Mr. Nobody", i.e. no
full pockets with money to spend, and not representing any major
organization. In such a position, you have pretty much nothing to say in
Vietnam.

Anh Chuong however just took my enthusiasm and (limited ;) knowledge and
invited me to participate in his group to promote Unicode. He did not care
about the formalities, he was practical and eager to help his/our Vietnam.

I often get angry, when foreign journalists, who know pretty much nothing
about what is really going on here, write, that everything will get better,
once those old "stubborn" war veterans are gone. I know some of those old
war veterans, who are real heroes. Not only for what they have done then,
but what they are fighting during peace times. Their energy, their
dedication to the "good cause", their vision for far goals, is more vibrant
than that of many of the younger ones who came later. Anh Truong was
definitely one of those in the IT field. And I am sad, that there is one
bright shining light less in Vietnam.

Anh Chuong,
I don't know whether they have eMail where you are now.
But I am pretty sure that you will get note of this mail somehow.
We miss you!

Till we see us again...
Stefan

PS: If somebody knows details about the funeral service, pls. post it to
the lists.
I will arrive back in VN on Tuesday evening. Hope that this will not be too
late.
