Source: http://www.dmeurope.com/default.asp?ArticleID=2556 Microsoft is set to roll-out a 'no-frills', low-cost version of its Windows XP operating system for third world markets. The new OS, Windows XP Starter Edition, offers lower-resolution graphics and restricts the ability to connect computers via a network. Also, the OS can only run three programmes at any one time. The stripped-down edition of the operating system is an attempt to undercut the spread of Linux in developing countries. The open source operating system is increasingly popular in Latin America and Asia, and HP announced a few months ago that its was to begin shipping desktops with Linux pre-installed to India and China. Windows XP Starter Edition, or 'XP Lite', will ship to Asia in October. HP is to collaborate with Novell, a distributor of a version of Linux, to develop the PCs, which will be aimed at enterprise customers who need PCs for very specific, as opposed to generalised, purposes. The US company has said that the move extends an agreement with Novell wherein HP has used Novell SuSE Linux on its larger servers, according to a report from Reuters. The announcement comes amidst a dispute between Novell and the SCO Group over the fact that Linux is based on code from Unix, the operating system SCO owns. Last week HP said it was thinking about producing Linux-based desktops for the Asian market. Source(s): Reuters
