Re: [OSS] Unikey UnicodeConverter, VietKey and other input tools

Hello there,

I started to use Vietkey for Unicode. But at that time you had to buy
the license in order to get rid of the "annoying" reminder screens.

Later, a friend of mine, vietnamese living in France, provided me with a
Windows program he wrote to type Vietnamese using 5 codes, Vietnet, TCVN
(ABC), VPS and VNI (input methods were Telex). This program is a
freeware and is called YAKCPVN (Yet an other keyboard control program
for typing Vietnamese).

More later on, I knew of Unikey and tested it. It is now installed on
all machines I have at our center, instead of Vietkey, because of the
GPL license.

Personnally, I still use YAKCPVN, for pure convenience and I think that
UNIKEY is a good choice and is the one I promote because you can easilly
download it.

To convert old documents (i.e. in TCVN) to Unicode, before I discovered
the utility that is provided on the unikey.sourceforge.net, I used (and
still does) a freeware utility, again designed by a group of Vietnamese
from Abroad (mainly France and Switzerland, etc.) that called by
Convert2Anything. You had to get your document as an RTF format then do
the converting (both directions as well). There were several other
options that I didn't used because the RTF conversion worked enough for
me. Translations of characters were good enough, although not 100%
accurate (that might be because I chose the wrong settings)., to get the
work done. That one had a code correspondance table (in txt format) that
should be easy to understand for any professional programmer so that you
could set your own table set (for the type of fonts you would be using.

I did download the utility from Unikey's site but could not figure out
yet how to work with it. I might be rather dumb ;-), but I rather was
not too motivated to investigate because I did not got any work to be
done and because I already got the Convert2Anything utility that worked
fine enough.

Regards
