Dear All, I am very pleased to be associated with this important symposium. This is the first general circulation of the notice for this meeting which intends to be more than just a scientific meeting but also a conference on how Geographic Information Systems can be useful in a broad range of fields, and most importantly to planners and decision makers. We are therefore seeking presenters from many different fields, from conservation and heritage trhough human development and city planning. It is intended that there will be special sessions including key presentations for policy makers. The deadline for abstracts is the end of April. There is a registration fee. Companies and agencies should consider supporting this conference, and preparing exhibits. ABOUT The International Symposium on GeoInformatics for Spatial-Infrastructure Development in Earth & Allied Sciences (GIS-IDEAS) is scheduled to take place in Hanoi, Vietnam, 16-18 September 2004. This is followup to the very successful GIS-IDEAS Symposium held in Hanoi, Vietnam in September 2002 (http://gisws.media.osaka-cu.ac.jp/gisideas/). The main theme of the GIS-IDEAS 2004 would be on Geoinformatics applications (Remote Sensing, GIS, GPS etc.) for monitoring, predicting, managing and mitigation of natural disasters. The symposium will also focus on development of spatial databases and analysis of spatial data for modelling and simulation of processes related to our natural and social environment. GIS-IDEAS Symposium in 2004 not only aims to serve as a forum for scientific exchanges but also as a conduit for technology transfer through tutorial sessions. Further, in order to promote a better understanding of local needs, field excursions and visits to scientific institutes in Vietnam are also being planned. The language of the conference will be English.
