March 9, 2004 LENGTH: 188 words HEADLINE: INFRASTRUCTURE: VIETNAM TO INVEST $ 19.87MLN IN OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE IN 2003-07 BYLINE: 2007, all new computers of State agencies, education institutes and large BODY: Vietnam will spend VND312 billion ($ 19.87 million) to develop and apply open source software (OSS) in the period between 2003 and 2007, announced the Ministry of Science & Technology at the third Asian Open Source Software Forum in Hanoi yesterday. The money will be invested in boosting OSS application, helping to protect copyright, cut costs, form a capable work force, produce OSS-based information technology products, and actively participate in the international OSS community. databases will be equipped with OSS. Recently, the Vietnamese Government has approved a master plan on applying and developing OSS in the country in the 2004-08 period, in order to boost the local information technology (IT) and software industry. According to the plan, the Ministry of Posts & Telecoms will be responsible for compiling OSS policies, the Ministry of Education for OSS training activities in universities, colleges and high schools, and the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids & Social Affairs for OSS training in vocational schools.
