Re: [OSS] Re: examples and success in implementing OSS in Vietnamese

Dear Mr. Vern Weitzel,

As far as I know, at present there is no standard Vietnamese language
Linux operating system and; office software for distribution to
Government offices.

However, you can obtain CDs for Vietkey Linux 3.0 (will oficially
released on August), OpenOffice 1.02 Vietnamese Version for Windows and
Mozilla 1.3.1 Vietnamese Version for Windows from Vietkey Group.

Briefly about Vietkey Linux 3.0 (only 1 CD):
- Kernel: 2.4.21 (newer than Redhat 9.0 - 2.4.20)
- X Window 4.3
- KDE: 3.1.2 (newer than Redhat 9.0 - 3.1.0)
- Open Office 1.02 Vietnamese Version
- Mozilla 1.3.1 Vietnamese Version (newer than Redhat 9.0 - 1.2)
- Xine, FreeAmp....

PS: We have OpenOffice and Mozilla for both Linux and Windows (9x,2K,XP)

Vern Weitzel viet:

Dear All,

Oddly enough, I got only one response (from Joakim Lofqvust) about
the implementation of Linux in Government in the month since I posted
this message. We know that by Government decision, Open Source should
be the default for Government Offices and that there is a plan for its
implementation.

May I ask the original question slightly differently and more
specifically:

1. Is there a standard Vietnamese language Linux operating system and
office software for distribution to Government offices?

2. If it exists, what is the contact person or organisation,
at what street address and under what product name(s)?

3. How can I obtain all of the CDs for this distribution?

4. And what is the process for updating this software?

I am very interested in installing current implementation in some
PCs in our office for testing. I sincerely want to see OSS in
action.

Can someone help me,

Cheers, Vern

Dear All,

A couple weeks ago I asked several lists about what fonts are
being used in Viet Nam. I got a lot of responses indicating that
Unicode is slow to catch on. If given time, I will try to summarise
these comments in coming days.

I have another question that is more specific and relates to progress
among the members of this list in implementing Vietnamese Open Source
operationg systems and software in Viet Nam.

It has been some time since we asked this last on these lists. Now
perhaps there may be results. I don't, for instance, see a Vietnamese
version of Open Office or localisation files on the OpenOffice.org
website. Perhaps this is naive of me, but I think we do need to have
this information presented in a way that the product can be improved
by a network of developers.

When we last met VietKey Linux it was being promoted more as a product
for sale than as genuine OpenSource. Has this changed. Was the
system tested and is it acceptable to the public?

Maybe I am out of the loop but we should be asking a lot of genuinely
important questions at this point about the value of localised OS
software.

Certainly if international organisations are going to fund projects
which use open source systems, they will need to be satisfied either
with the acceptibility of the software or of its mechanism for
improvement.

At this point, I don't have any idea where we are in real terms.
How could we achieve that so that implementers better know where they
are going, how they are going to get there and how fast?

Best, Vern
