The use of OpenSource

HELLO ALL!

I am not really sure what status localization (into Vietnamese) of
OpenOffice and other open source applications have at the moment. It is
sometimes hard to choose in what way one wants to use OSS.

I would like to give you a referens to the organization I am responsibel for
(a part of the Swedish government). We mainly use open source applications
on Windows and Unix. Every OSS application listed below is possible to
localize into Vietnamese.

OFFICE SUITE
We offer people to use both MS Office and StarOffice. It depends on what
they used to. OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) is also an alternative
aspecially now when there is a easy way to install dictionaries ( a part of
the OpenOffice Documentation Project www.ooodocs.org).
* StarOffice is for free in Swedish schools. It is maybe time to contact Sun
Microsystem regarding Vietnam.

WEB AND SERVER
We use apache (www.apche.org) on a couple of webservers and Samba
(www.samba.org) to integrate a Unix server.

DATABASE
We use MySQL (www.mysql.com) (a Uppsala (Sweden) based company) for
different kind of databases.

IMAGES/PICTURES/MULITMEDIA
For images and pictures we use Photoshop on a couple of PCs but everyone can
use The GIMP (www.gimp.org).
We also use The Zinf (www.zinf.org) to play music.

ADMINISTRATION
For remote access and monitoring we use RealVNC (www.realvnc.org).

EXPERIMENTS
We need to check our website in every possible way. Mozilla
(www.mozilla.org) is one of the browsers we use for this.
We are testing Sendmail (www.sendmail.org) as a spamfilter (things that MS
Exchange does not handle).

A great list of OSS on windows (http://gnuwin.epfl.ch/apps/en/index.html )

My aim is to give you a "picture" on how to use open source within the
organization. Our contribution back to the developers is mainly buggreports
but also some modifications (adjustments).
