Software piracy rising again in India, Microsoft official says http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/news/editorial/5258372.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp BANGALORE, India (AP) - Software piracy has begun rising again in India, with nearly 70 percent of the programs used in the country now illegal, a Microsoft official said Tuesday. ``It is a matter of great concern for us,'' Rajiv Kaul, managing director of Microsoft India, said at the launch of a school administration software system in Bangalore, India's technology hub. The software was developed by a local company using Microsoft technology. Kaul said piracy declined two years ago after software associations and Indian authorities made efforts to stop use of illegal software. But the practice has picked up again in recent months, he said. Hundreds of thousands of desktop computers in India run on pirated Windows operating systems, resulting in millions of dollars in lost license fees for Microsoft, he said. Individual computer users do much of the stealing, Kaul said. ``Among organizations, there is a change for the better. They are buying more licenses now,'' he said. Kaul said his company will not rely on Microsoft-organized raids or court cases to stop piracy, because that is the job of state governments. ``Instead, we are trying to educate the users on the need to use genuine software,'' he said. <end>
