The Toronto Star Feb. 18, 2003. 12:41 AM NEW YORK—More than five million Visa and MasterCard accounts throughout the United States were accessed after the computer system at a third party processor was hacked into, according to representatives for the card associations. Early signs suggest none of the data, which would include credit card numbers, was used in a fraudulent way, according to the representatives. They said they could not say when or how the breach took place because it involved a third party processor used by merchants. The processor whom they would not name is working with police. Visa and MasterCard, associations of financial institutions that issue such cards, said no customer would be liable for charges incurred as a result of fraud. A spokesman for Visa in Canada said no accounts there were affected. A Canadian spokesperson for MasterCard could not be reached. http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1035777886227&call_pageid=968332188854&col=968350060724
